fighting apathy

CONVERSATION BETWEEN TWO UNIDENTIFIED SELVES
ON OR ABOUT 10 2:48 HOTEL JULY 2005

Paul Nathan Generoso

48% of me wants Gloria relieved (if Pulse Asia is to be believed)
and Noli is my source of anxiety.

It is Ratzinger's fault that the CBCP fought
not for her ouster but for prayers.
If Cardinal Sin were still alive,
the Church would not have gone through
a fifteen-decade discernment just to come up
with a lapse of judgement. Just like she did

when she called up Garci to ask
if she will win by one million
by fixing the results in Lanao.

Was it a failed judgement or a failure of elections?
Loren is so convinced that she won over de Castro
that she looks like the political prostitute
that she really is. See, even Susan Roces
did not bite her bid. Even Imee Marcos,
who thought that the silent majority wants
her frozen father back seemed uninvited
in the protest that filled Ayala Ave. last week.

They're back, I tell you, power prostitutes and all.
Should we trust Nene Pimentel then, that his call
for a snap elections does not include him being
a possible candidate? Should we trust Jinggoy
that his joining the bandwagon of a governing council
will not resurrect Erap and Linggoy Alcuaz
and Ronaldo Lumbao and give a lease of political life
to Rex Cortez and Niño Mulach? Should we trust Chavit
and Duterte that their calls for separate states
indicate that their constituents find protests in Manila
so-so? Should we trust Ramos that his call for cha-cha
will not bring youth back to an irrelevant de Venecia?

Did Drilon make the right decision when he
and his Liberal Party bolted the administratio,
or is he just after his own survival? Maybe
he should just go instead to Iloilo and build
his own Malacañang there. Is that young chap Chiz
while smiling in front of the camera saying
that the opposition is in fact united, or is UNO
a misnomer, as they cannot agree among themselves
whether constitutional or not? Biazon last week said

that a sizeable number of junior and senior officers
of the military are disgruntled with the prostitution
of their profession, or does he have the illusion
that he still is Chief-of-Staff? But I do not blame him,
I do not blame him that his own bloc wanted him
blocked out of the senatorial race in favor
of Barbers who will give everyone a nice cut.

48% of me wants Gloria relieved
and Noli is my source of anxiety.
VAT without the standby authority
will still bring P60 billion
next year due to higher prices of goods
and a ballooning public sector deficit
which was their fault in the first place.

Keep on babbling, all of you, the whole caboodle
legal gobbledygook and I accuse you're out of order,
Mr. Chairman. What kind of a Congress is this?
Lopez is sure happy of Teddyboy's free publicity
of ANC. Keep on babbling! All of you,
the whole caboodle, and I might just plant a bomb
at BAtasang Pambansa, at the Senate compound,
at Malacañang and at EDSA in between Crame and Aguinaldo
as I do not have an extra bomb. Surely,
no more Olympics will take place.

The jueteng lords are happily back in business,
as they found a way to skirt the anti-illegal
numbers game law asthey are now using letters.
Unlike them, I do not know what to do.

Should I also give Garci a ring
and have my decision fixed as well?
But the military who supposedly decided
for EDSA one and two's fate is not
marunong to make ano and kwan the votes.

Should I have my conscience wiretapped instead?

If they do, maybe they will find out
that this silent majorityis not silent anymore
that it wants genuine change, not just
a reshuffle of disgruntled cabinet members, not
cha-cha called by some tobacco-wielding swinger,
not power-sharing agreements among trapos:

they had been sharing power among themselves for so long already.

If they wiretap my conscience, maybe they'll know
that this silent majority wants a revolution,
that it wants genuine change, and it wants it now.

kisles & peanut... ginulat nyo akong dalawa. nice to finally meet you guys. sa uulitin! kayo naman dumayo dito! =p

teanuts & trina... pasensya na kasi medyo lost din ako nun sa pila. it was great to see you two. next time, we'll talk more!

lyle & dave... you came. and your presence made the night more meaningful. thank you.

con & nayna... kahit di pa tayo nagmi-meet, astig kayong dalawa para sa 'kin. magkikita rin tayo. everything in its own sweet time. ; )

roch & lex... ang mahal kong kapatid at kanyang BF-of-3yrs (clap-clap). ngayon alam mo na ang pinaggagawa ng ate mo. haha.

lucy... you were there in spirit. thanks so much for the concern. my heart... was a bit shaken, but not stirred. i'm alright. : )

diane... ever present in times of need. may mas dependable pa bang tao kaysa sa'yo? that, i doubt. ey, thanks dude!

congratulations sa lahat bumubuo ng "Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros" at "Sarong Banggi"! raymond, emman, michiko, auraeus, hai, jade, ned, jo, alfred, jhun, clint, dempster, lena, marinet, mark, marlon, merv, chard, loren liit, maritess, loren at boo! UFO rocks! ^_^

variations on the word "sleep"

I would like to watch you sleeping,
which may not happen.
I would like to watch you,
sleeping. I would like to
sleep with you, to enter
your sleep as its smooth dark wave
slides over my head

and walk with you through that lucent
wavering forest of bluegreen leaves
with its watery sun and three moons
towards the cave where you must descend,
towards your worst fear

I would like to give you
the silver branch,
the small white flower,
the one word that will protect you
from the grief at the center
of your dream, from the grief
at the center. I would like to follow
you up the long stairway
again and become
the boat that would row you back
carefully, a flame
in two cupped hands
to where your body lies
beside me, and you enter it
as easily as breathing in

I would like to be the air
that inhabits you for a moment
only. I would like to be that unnoticed
and that necessary.

mister punch in manila

i quite underestimated my peers.

when i went to the Gateway Mall on monday for the announced 5:30pm booksigning, i was astonished to find the line from Fully Booked (on the 3rd floor), coming all the way down to the ground floor and even going outside the mall entrance, winding through and almost paralizing the escalators. rabid book-totting fans of all shapes, sizes and colors came out in full force for the chance-in-a-lifetime event. i spotted a couple that i swear looked like the splitting image of Death and Dream, in full costume (they could put starwars fans to shame). i also found friends in the line, some having been since 7 o'clock in the morning. and they aren't even in front.

disheartened by the length of the queue, i hid my copy of "Coraline" and contented myself to staying in front of the bookshop itself, hoping to get a glimpse of the man. this is one of those rare times when i wish i was taller. or that my eyesight was still 20/20. or that i didn't lose my glasses. or at least i brought a camera with mind-blowing optical zoom. all the buzz going on in the mall attracted a lot of attention. i heard some of the passersby jostling with the rest of the crowd and asking, "sinong nandyan? may artista ba?"

funny. ^_^

from neil gaiman's journal, about the earlier signing at the Rockwell Tent:

"In the Philippines, the people are enthusiastic on a level that makes the Brazilians look reserved and polite. I don't remember ever having felt so loved by so many people. They shout very loudly when they're happy, too. There's a noise that a few thousand of the locals make when they all shout at once to let you know they're happy to see you that made me finally understand the idea of a wall of sound...

Apparently over 3000 people turned up to see me, although only 700 tickets guaranteeing you a signature were given out (and had all gone well before lunchtime). (Which I still don't quite understand as I was told it would be limited to 500. But there you go.) It began late, due to overrunning tv interviews, followed by Printer Hell, when I couldn't get something to print out on the hotel printer, so I had to read it on stage from the laptop -- which left me feeling I'd made the right choice in getting a laptop that weighs about 2lb. So the event began a little after 4:00pm. A short ANANSI BOYS reading, a short Q&A, and then I signed...

I stayed till everyone still there in the tent was done -- I finished signing for the last people in line, all of us more than somewhat shellshocked, around 1:25 am.

PS. I think I'm now addicted to calamansi juice."

passion, reason and coffee to go

it was already very late when i came to their house that night. we were to settle some business, which served as a convenient excuse to spend time together. he came downstairs after his mom called him, rubbing his eyes, and sleepily reproached me for waking him up from a dream. i smiled and took a seat. i could tell he was glad to see me.

carlo was my closest college buddy, and our friendship has remained strong 'til now. i am very grateful for the way he matches my legendary crankiness with an inexhaustible fountain of patience. he is the ever present rock who anchors my otherwise topsy-turvy life and offers unquestioning support. i recall the time last year when me and my then girlfriend were tinkering with the idea of having a kid (in the far, faaar away future). carlo, god bless him, volunteered himself as a donor without batting an eyelash. i stared at him and curled my eyebrow.

after the primary purpose of my visit had been taken cared of, we made use of the time to catch up over sips of coffee, like old friends do. at one point, he suddenly asked me, "are you happy being single?"

"why, of course!" i said, perhaps a little too quickly. i placed my half-empty glass on the table. "okay... there are times when i get lonesome, too. why do you ask?"

"lately i've been entertaining the thought."

it seemed like a pitch that came out of nowhere - the kind whose presence you only begin to sense when it finally hits you. and all this time i've been envious of him for having what i thought was a smooth-sailing relationship, in contrast to my past turbulent engagement. how strange the world is.

"what about her?"

"my birthday's getting near," he reminded me. his birthday coincided with their anniversary. "this long and until now... i still don't feel... anything."

i was thrown to confusion. what then was the standard when stability and longevity does not always equate to certainty? it made me re-evaluate my own relationship and became thankful that at the very least, i knew what i felt then was real.

"we tried, it's enough... i'd rather stay single for now," he said. "less hassles, more time for myself."

"i don't know how you two were able to keep it going for so long... without the feeling."

"she doesn't demmand much from me. it helped a lot," he said, looking away. "i hope she manages..."

"how odd... me and her... we were so in love, but we always got into arguments and fell apart... i wanted it to last so bad."

"you expected too much from each other," he accused.

"we were too intense, both of us... i think i've learned a lot since then." i looked at carlo - always calm, always in control. "but i'm not you. i can't plunge into anything i'm not passionate about."

"doesn't it get tiring?"

"sometimes. but the madness drives me," i beamed.

he smiled softly. "yup, that's you."

we both nodded in agreement. it was time to fill the empty cups.

jane's world

something nifty i found while googling: a lesbian comic strip. who knew?

hoping to do something similar to this (a web comic) in the near future. or maybe far-away future. that stylus pen in the office has a mind of its own. i kid you not.

a brief intro to the scenes below. maggie, jane's long-time object of affection, was rushed to the hospital after an accident. her friends ethan and dorothy come visit, with jane rushing join them. now let's have a peek at jane's world and follow the misadventures of our geeky butch heroine.

looks like she's having some trouble with her boobies. hmmm... :P

want more of jane? click here.

and while you're at it, please visit my friend's comic site, Gay Balls of Fire. it's a riot. ;)

wet 'n wild

friday. 9am. españa. traffic jam.

shuffle and i got off at the corner of Lacson Avenue, where we saw a crowd gathering out the UST campus. a lot of the people were carrying colorful banners and streamers. a few were even wearing costumes.

good, i thought. just in time.

we took turns at the camera. yeah, indie media coverage. i had first crack at filming the event - the 17th Anniversary of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program. CARP started out as the flagship project of then President Aquino, made into law in 1988. several presidents later, most of the big farmlands are still owned by a few wealthy hacienderos, and 7 out of 10 filipino farmers don't have their own lands to till.

peasant farmers from as far as ilocos to bicol poured into manila to air their grievances. soon, the march started. the rally would be taken to mendiola, in earshot from malacañang. there was the usual chanting and singing and everyone was in high spirits. but before the protesters could get to mendiola, they were met with a blockade of anti-riot policemen, with a firetruck to boot. this confused the crowd since they had a permit to rally from no less than Mayor Atienza himself. shuffle got the videocam and told me to go to safety if things went ugly.

and it did.

in just a few moments, things heated up between the rallyists and the dispersal team. the firetruck suddenly started hitting the crowd with their high-pressure water canons and the police began striking with their sticks. everybody ran for cover. it was madness. good thing i was near the sidelines when it started, but even a big SUV didn't prevent me from getting wet. oh well, a little water doesn't hurt.

so there. my first time. a baptism in the streets. :-)

no need to worry though coz order was restored quickly. the police stood their ground and never allowed the crowd to reach mendiola, however the protesters were able to stage and finish their program peacefully right there at morayta. the three persons who were arrested earlier in the altercation were freed, albeit with a few bumps and bruises care of the police - most of whom in the frontline were really young. i don't bear any grudges against them. it's a sad, sad job that they have to do.

if you saw the news on ABS, yeah, that was shuffle's footage that they borrowed and didn't even have the decency to give credit. bah. big networks suck.

the things little guys have to put up with just to get the message out...

WAG NA WAG MONG SASABIHIN
by Kitchie Nadal

may gusto ka bang sabihin?
at hindi mapakali,
ni hindi makatingin
sana'y wag mo na 'tong palipasin
at subukang lutasin,
sa mga sinabi mo na...

iba ang nararapat sa akin,
na tunay kong mamahalin

wag na wag mong sasabihin
na hindi mo nadama itong
pag-ibig kong handang ibigay
kahit pa ang kalayaan mo

ano man ang iyong inaakala,
na ako'y isang bituin
na walang sasambahin
hindi ko man ito ipakita,
abot-langit ang daing
sa mga sinabi mo na...

iba ang nararapat sa akin,
na tunay kong mamahalin

wag na wag mong sasabihin
na hindi mo nadama itong
pag-ibig kong handang ibigay
kahit pa ang kalayaan mo

at sa gabi, sinong duduyan sayo? at sa umaga, ang hangin na hahaplos sayo?

wag na wag mong sasabihin
na hindi mo nadama itong
pag-ibig kong handang ibigay
kahit pa ang kalayaan mo
